The 7 Growth Leaks in Partner-Led Professional Services Firms
Find where commercial effort loses effectiveness before adding more activity.
Start with the leak, then choose the intervention.
A firm can have talented people and satisfied clients while struggling to repeat its growth. Use these seven questions to locate the constraint. Review recent won, lost and stalled opportunities rather than relying only on impressions.
- Diffuse market focus. Are you pursuing buyers with a shared problem and a credible reason to choose your firm? Compare win rates and service economics across segments.
- Expertise without a clear offer. Can a buyer explain the outcome, scope and next step? Review proposals for repeated confusion and unnecessary customization.
- Rainmaker concentration. Who owns origination, relationships and expansion? Map revenue and pipeline by relationship owner, with a plan for coverage.
- Cross-sell without ownership. Does someone identify the client’s next problem and coordinate the introduction? Track accepted introductions and qualified opportunities.
- Referrals without a channel. Do partners know whom to refer, when and why? Review sourced opportunities and follow-up, not meeting counts alone.
- Pipeline without evidence. Are stages based on buyer actions, or seller optimism? Check qualification, aging, next steps and forecast variance.
- Activity without accountability. Do sales, marketing and delivery share priorities and decisions? Review owners, capacity, handoffs and commercial cadence.
Choose one leak to fix first.
Record the evidence, consequence, owner and first action. Set a baseline and a review date. Test the change in one service line or segment before expanding it.
